Major breakthrough in lithium battery, 60% charge in 6 minutes

The agency expects China's shipments of anode materials to increase from 365,000 tons in 2020 to 1.48 million tons in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 32%. Enterprises with higher graphitization self-supply rate and gradually improved integrated industrial layout have strong cost advantages and are expected to realize both volume and profit.


New breakthroughs have been made in Lithium Battery materials


Charging is expected to speed up


According to the proceedings, recently, member of China university of science and technology shu-hong yu team with professor Yao Hongbin, NiYong team, committed to solve high energy density Lithium ion Batteries and the contradiction between the fast charging performance, put forward and the preparation of a new type of double gradient graphite anode materials, realization of lithium ion battery charging 60% in 6 minutes. The results were recently published in Science Advances.


At present, electric vehicles driven by Lithium Ion Batteries are favored by people for their energy saving and environmental protection. However, the charging time of electric vehicles is much longer than the refueling time of traditional fuel vehicles, which greatly reduces the user experience. The main reason is the poor rate performance of graphite anode in Lithium Ion Battery, which limits the fast charging ability of electric vehicles.


In order to improve the rate performance of graphite anode, the conventional strategy is to make the graphite electrode porous or thin. However, these methods tend to sacrifice the energy density of the resulting cell. Yu shuhong's team started from designing the electrode structure to improve the fast charging performance of lithium-ion batteries under the condition of ensuring the energy density.


The research team developed a self-assembly technology of low viscosity non-polymer binder paste. The paste was prepared by mixing copper-coated graphite anode particles and copper nanowires in ethanol solution. By using the difference of settling velocity of graphite particles of different sizes in the paste, the simulated calculation optimization of double gradient structure was successfully constructed to obtain the electrode.


The researchers found that lithium-ion batteries based on the new dual-gradient graphite anode material charged from zero to 60% and 80% in 5.6 and 11.4 minutes, respectively, while maintaining high energy density.

The explosive growth of Cathode materials in China

Graphitization supply and demand is tight

Since the fourth quarter of 2020, the cathode material market ushered in explosive growth. According to the "White Paper on The Development of China's Cathode Material Industry (2022)" jointly released by research institute EVTank and IVEY Economic Research Institute, shipments of cathode materials in China reached 779,000 tons in 2021, up 86.4 percent year-on-year. The global share increased from 77.7% in 2020 to 86.1% in 2021.


According to Dongguan Securities Research Report, China is the world's most important producer of anode materials, with its shipments increasing to about 70% in the past two years. China's shipments of anode materials are expected to increase from 365,000 tons in 2020 to 1.48 million tons in 2025, with a compound annual growth rate of 32%.

Under the influence of national dual control of energy consumption, the production capacity of graphitization processing with high energy consumption is limited. Meanwhile, the demand of downstream new energy vehicle market is growing rapidly, and the supply and demand of graphitization is tight. In recent years, China's lithium battery anode material head enterprises have gradually moved to the upstream graphitization processing layout. The enterprises with higher graphitization self-supply rate and gradually improved integrated industrial layout have strong cost advantages and are expected to realize the simultaneous rise of volume and profit.


Graphite negative concept stocks rebounded substantially

Statistics from Securities Times · Data Treasure show that there are less than 15 companies with graphite anode material related production capacity and technology in A stock market. These stocks have continued to rebound since May, with an average gain of 12.88% by the end of May 23, far outpacing the Shanghai Composite index.


From the institution's attention, the most favored by the institution is Putailai, 29 research reports give the stock positive rating. It was followed by Jerry Group, Longbai Group, Zhongke Electric, Shanshan Shares and so on. According to the consensus forecast of more than 5 institutions, Keda Manufacturing and Zhongke Electric are expected to double their net profit growth in 2022. The latest closing price and institutions consistent forecast target price comparison, Fang Da Carbon, Shanshan Shares, Longbai Group, Beitrui and other four shares rose more than 50% space.


According to the company's annual report, by the end of 2021, the company has formed an annual output capacity of more than 150,000 tons of anode materials, including 110,000 tons of graphitization processing capacity and 100,000 tons of carbonization processing capacity. The company will add at least 100,000 tons of negative integration capacity in 2023.


Shanshan is the first company engaged in the research and development and production of artificial graphite anode materials for lithium-ion batteries in China. By the end of 2021, the production capacity of finished anode materials of the company is 120,000 tons, and the graphitization capacity is 42,000 tons.


Dow Technology said on the interactive platform on May 17 that the company plans to build an annual output of 5,000 tons of carbon nanotube powder, 30,000 tons of carbon nanotube slurry and 150,000 tons of silicon carbon, graphite anode materials and graphitization processing and production projects at the Lanzhou base. The first phase of the project is planned to construct 70,000 tons of graphite anode materials (including 100,000 tons of graphitization processing) and is expected to start construction by the end of May 2022.


On May 7th, Zhongke Electric mentioned on the interactive platform that its hunan Zhongke Xingcheng Graphite Co., LTD., which has an annual output of 50,000 tons of lithium battery anode material production base project, has completed the plant construction and is now in the equipment installation and commissioning stage.


Xiangfeng Huaxin products are mainly graphite anode materials. By the end of 2021, the company has a production capacity of 30,000 tons of anode materials, 30,000 tons of fundraising projects under construction, and 60,000 tons of high-end artificial graphite anode material integration production base construction projects under preparation, a total of 120,000 tons. The annual graphitization capacity of the company is 15,000 tons, of which 3,000 tons have been fully produced. 12,000 tons of graphitization is under construction and part of it is put into use. It is expected to reach production within this year.


Geri's 2021 annual report shows that the company has implemented a 100,000-ton graphite anode material integration project for lithium-ion battery in Tianshui, Gansu province, and cooperated with Zhao Jinbao's team in Jiageng Innovation Laboratory to implement an 18,000-ton silica-based composite anode material project for lithium-ion battery in Xiamen, Fujian Province.


The first-phase 10,000-ton anode graphitization project of Yicheng Xineng Qinghai Tianlan has been put into operation, and the second-phase anode material project is speeding up the pre-processing procedures.
