The Bigger Challenge in America's Power Sector

The POWER sector in the United States is already half net zero, but achieving net zero in the future is a big challenge.America's power sector is struggling to decarbonise. Although, the power sector in the United States has reduced greenhouse gas emissions over the past 15 years. But the country needs to work harder to decarbonize the transport, construction and industrial sectors.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from electricity generation in 2020 were about half the projections made in 2005 and 40% below actual 2005 levels, according to a Department of Energy (DOE) April 2021 study. Net zero emissions across the country are projected to require an even faster transition to clean energy by 2050. Each sector is very eager for new energy and expectations, although the realization of zero emissions has great difficulties. Princeton and other research institutions have pointed to the need to continue to develop new technologies and greener energy sources, and to increase research and investment in clean energy.

Emissions in 2020 were affected by COVID-19. Over the past 15 years, carbon dioxide reductions have been driven by economic, technological and policy reasons. Energy efficiencies lowered electricity demand 24% below projections. Renewables grew 79% more than projected. Natural gas use increased 112%, but coal and oil generation in 2020 was 70% below 2005.

Wiser says the figures show only the past, but have no way of telling future results. We should pay attention to carbon dioxide emission and prevent it in time.
