Battery enterprises frequently deploy energy storage


Energy storage refers to the process of storing energy through a medium or device and releasing it when needed. According to the way of energy storage, energy storage can be divided into physical energy storage, chemical energy storage, electromagnetic energy storage. Among the three, electrochemical energy storage has the widest application scope and the greatest development potential, mainly including lead-acid battery, lithium ion battery, sodium-sulfur battery and liquid flow battery, among which Lithium Ion Battery has the largest accumulative installed scale.


According to everbright Securities, China's energy storage investment market space will reach 0.45 trillion yuan by 2025 and grow to around 1.30 trillion yuan by 2030. China also attaches great importance to the energy storage field and has issued several documents to support the development of energy storage:


In July last year, the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration jointly issued the Guidance on Accelerating the Development of New Energy storage, which proposed that: by 2025, the new energy storage such as Lithium ion Batteries should be transformed from the initial stage of commercialization to large-scale development, and the installed scale should reach more than 30 million kW; By 2030, the comprehensive market development of new energy storage will be realized, and new energy storage will become one of the key supports for carbon peak and carbon neutrality in the energy field.

At the end of 2021, the National Energy Administration said it would promote the large-scale development of new energy storage during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, and promote the organic integration and coordinated development of new energy storage and new power system.


On January 18 this year, the launch meeting of safety standard for Lithium Battery for energy storage was held in Beijing, marking the official start of the preparation of the strong standard.


Ningde Times, Honeycomb Energy, Xinwanda, Yiwei lithium energy and other domestic power battery giants have already laid out the storage battery related fields in advance. Entering 2022, there are a number of battery companies competing for the track:


In China, on January 10, penghui Energy liuzhou Smart Energy storage and power battery manufacturing base project officially laid the foundation. The planned area of the project is about 550-850 mu, and the total investment is estimated to be about 6 billion yuan. The overall planned production capacity is 20GWh, and the main layout is lithium battery cell and PACK production line.


On January 11, Corun announced that the company plans to jointly invest and set up Corun Shuzhi Energy with corun Holdings, the indirect controlling shareholder of the company. The two sides plan to jointly expand the energy storage market on the power generation side, the power grid side and the user side by combining their respective advantages.


On January 16, Sunwei said that on January 14, the company signed an agreement with Conk Venture on the investment and construction of the first 40,000 tons of the integrated project of 200,000 tons of power storage battery negative material, and planned to jointly establish a joint venture to operate the investment project. The total planning of the project is 200,000 tons/year, and the total investment is expected to be 8 billion YUAN. The first phase of the project will be the integration project of 40,000 tons/year of power energy storage battery anode materials, with an estimated investment of 1.6 billion yuan.


February 6, Huaneng energy storage battery procurement results public, Haichen new Energy successfully won the bid. It is reported that the energy storage cell purchased by the project is 280Ah energy storage cell of Haichen New Energy, with a total capacity of 2GWh.


On February 10, Mingyang Intelligent with 190 million yuan of capital increase production of Lithium Ion Batteries and energy storage system haiji new energy, 13.03% of its shares, crossover into the energy storage industry.


On February 17, LG New Energy announced that it has formally acquired 100% of NEC Energy Solutions(NEC ES), an Energy storage system manufacturer based in the United States of Japan. LG New Energy will enter the energy storage system integration market as LG New Energy Vertech, the report said.


The new company will be responsible for the planning, design and maintenance of the energy storage system integration project, as well as the integration of necessary equipment including batteries and power conversion systems (PCS) to provide services for optimizing the energy storage business of LG New Energy.


Energy storage battery safety can not be ignored


It is worth noting that battery companies' foray into energy storage has also brought more accidents.


On the night of February 13, about 10 battery racks were melted at the Moss Landing power storage project in California. As early as the evening of September 4, 2021, about 7% of the project's battery modules and other system equipment were lost due to the activation of the battery's water cooling system.


It is understood that Moss Landing storage power station began operation on December 11, 2020, containing 300MW/1200MWh lithium ion batteries. At full capacity, the power station can power 225,000 homes for four hours.


LG New Energy supplied 4,500 TR1300 battery racks as well as JH4 high energy cells for the project, battery Alliance found.


In addition, on April 16, 2021, an explosion occurred in the energy storage power station of Beijing Guocun FoSS Optical Storage and Charging Technology Co., Ltd. located in Dahongmen, Fengtai District, Beijing, resulting in the death of two firefighters, the injury of one firefighter and the loss of contact of one employee in the power station.

According to the data, the energy storage power station in the accident was put into operation in 2019. It belongs to the integrated system of user-side photovoltaic - energy storage - charging pile, and the energy storage battery is 25MWh lithium iron phosphate battery.

Last November 22, Beijing Fengtai district energy storage power station fire and explosion accident investigation report officially released. It was determined that the direct cause of the fire in the south building was the internal short circuit failure of the Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery in the west battery room, which caused the battery thermal runaway fire. The direct cause of the explosion in the north building is the internal short circuit failure of the monomer lithium iron phosphate battery in the battery room of the south building, which leads to the thermal runaway diffusion of the battery and battery module, and the flammable and explosive mixture generated by the accident enters the energy storage room of the north building through the cable trench and diffuses, mixes with the air to form explosive gas, and explodes in the event of electrical spark.

Some institutions predict that energy storage investment market space will be 1.3 trillion yuan in 2030 and 5 trillion yuan in 2060. This presents a huge opportunity for lithium Battery Storage, which accounts for 99% of the global increase in electrochemical storage by 2020.

It can be predicted that with more applications of power batteries in the field of energy storage in the future, the demand for energy storage batteries will gradually increase. At the same time, how to improve the safety of energy storage batteries and reduce the occurrence of accidents will become a problem that the whole industry needs to think deeply.
